Várpalotai BSK is a Hungarian handball club from Várpalota, that plays in the Nemzeti Bajnokság II.
History
Várpalotai Bányász SK is a sports club founded in 1927. The first men's handball division was established in 1952. The team entered the county championship in 1953. In 1962, Várpalotai Bányász won the championship and was promoted to the then Nemzeti Bajnokság II. In 1968, the club can celebrate a bronze medal in the Nemzeti Bajnokság II. The 1974 champion of Nemzeti Bajnokság II is Várpalotai Bányász Sport Kör, and can start the next season already in NB I/B. In 1979, the team won a bronze medal in the NB I/B. In 1981, the Várpalotai Bányász won the NB I/B gold medal, and for the first time in its history, they advanced to the highest national division of the sport, the Nemzeti Bajnokság I. The team finishes its first Nemzeti Bajnokság I year in 9th place. The club then played in the highest division for 11 seasons (1982–1993), and then withdrew its team from further competition as a result of the economic impossibility following the regime change. The best result of the team's first division membership was two 4th places (in 1985 and 1992). After the withdrawal, many people transferred to other teams, and the termination of the team was also discussed, but this did not happen in the end. The team based on the remaining players (Szedlák, Balogh G., Bakacs, Nagy R., Szilágyi) entered the county championship and won it by a landslide. In the 1994/95 season, the team already won the championship in Nemzeti Bajnokság II, winning 20 of its 22 matches. Between 1995 and 2000, the club was again in the NB I/B. After that, the red-blacks compete in the NB I/B and in the Nemzeti Bajnokság II. Várpalota finished the 2008/09 Nemzeti Bajnokság II season at the top again. From 2009/10, team is again in NB I/B. After the 2015/16 season, the team was relegated from NB I/B. Since then, the team has been in Nemzeti Bajnokság II.[1]
