Tim Mak is an American journalist and editor of the Kyiv-based publication 'The Counteroffensive.'[2]

He was previously an investigative correspondent for National Public Radio.[3] He covers national security, politics, and the role of emerging technologies.[3]

Career

He graduated from McGill University where he was valedictorian.[4]

Mak is known for writing the first report on convicted Russian agent Maria Butina[5] and for publishing recorded audio of threats made by President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen. Cohen was threatening Mak in an attempt to prevent a story about Trump from being published.[6][7]

He has also written extensively on the National Rifle Association of America (NRA). In 2021, he published secret tapes showing how the organization's executives reacted in strategy sessions following the Columbine High School massacre.[8] He is an author of a book on the inner workings of the NRA, titled 'Misfire' and published by E. P. Dutton.[9][10][11][12][13]

He also covered the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine from within the country, after having arrived on the night the invasion began.[14][3] His investigations in Ukraine include tracking down the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade,[15] and his extensive effort to solve a war crime in the town of Nova Basan.[16]

In May 2023 he launched The Counteroffensive, which focuses on narrative journalism that tells personal experiences from Ukraine during the Russian invasion, and in other places where people face challenges from authoritarianism. He told Slate Magazine that he wants to tell "deeply-reported human interest stories that humanize events."[17]
