Paschimbanga Dibas (Bengali: পশ্চিমবঙ্গ দিবস), also known as West Bengal Day, is the day, which is celebrated by peoples of West Bengal and dedicated to the Indian state of West Bengal. It will be officially celebrated every year on 1st Boishakh (April 14/15) according to the Bengali calendars (original version), which will start on 1st Boishakh of 1331 Baṅgābda or 15 April 2024.[1][2][3] Besides, the Raj Bhavan, official residence of the governor of West Bengal, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) observe Paschimbanga Dibas on 20 June.[4]

History

Many social media users wished "West Bengal Day" on 20 June 2020, because on 20 June 1947, the Bengal Legislative Assembly decided to divide Bengal and form West Bengal.[5] For the same reason, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) observes West Bengal Day on 20 June.[6][7]

Governor of West Bengal C. V. Anand Bose celebrated West Bengal Day at the Raj Bhavan on 20 June 2023.[8] But Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee did not want to celebrate this day (20 Jun) as "West Bengal Day". In response to the West Bengal Day celebrated by the BJP and the Raj Bhavan, the Government of West Bengal requested a discussion in the West Bengal Legislative assembly to fix an alternative day for the West Bengal Day. On 18 August 2023, Biman Banerjee, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, has officially created the West Bengal Day Determination Committee.[9][10] A proposal to officially designate West Bengal Day was tabled in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in August 2023.[3] After much deliberation, it was decided on August 22 to adopt the date 1st Boishakh or Pohela Boishakh (April 14/15) of the Bengal calendar (original version) as the official West Bengal Day.[3][11][12]
