Edward Mark Lohse (born November 23, 1961) is an American prelate of the Catholic Church who serves as bishop for the Diocese of Kalamazoo in Michigan.

Biography

Early Life

Lohse was born in 1961 and raised on a farm in McKean, Pennsylvania, the sixth of seven children of Edward and Ida (née Dedrick) Lohse.[1][2] His family attended St. Francis Xavier church and he went to elementary school at Our Lady of Peace School in Mill Creek before graduating from Cathedral Preparatory School in 1980 and Gannon University in 1984, having begun college seminary formation at St. Mark Seminary. He completed graduate studies at Saint Vincent Seminary and earned his master's in divinity in 1988.[3][4] He was ordained to the diaconate on October 22, 1988 and a priest by bishop Michael Joseph Murphy on April 21, 1989, at St. Peter Cathedral.[5][6]

Priesthood

His first assignment following ordination was as a campus minister and teacher of theology, German, and Latin at Central Catholic High School and parochial vicar at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Corry. He also served as an adjunct professor at Gannon before becoming the diocesan chancellor in 2007.[7]

From 2010 to 2016, Lohse served at the Congregation for Clergy in the Roman Curia, also teaching as an adjunct faculty member at the Pontifical North American College and gaining his doctoral degree from the Pontifical Gregorian University.[5] In 2015 he was granted the title of Monsignor by Pope Francis.[3]

Episcopacy

Pope Francis appointed Lohse bishop for the Diocese of Kalamazoo on May 23, 2023.[8][9][10] Lohse was consecrated a bishop by Archbishop Allen Vigneron on July 25, 2023.[11][12]
