I Hate Fairyland – I Hate Image is a one-shot graphic novel, written and illustrated by Skottie Young that was released on May 5, 2017, by Image Comics for Free Comic Book Day, as a crossover between the comic book series of the same name, the Image Universe, and other Image Comics titles, set between the events of Fluff My Life and Good Girl as Gertrude "Gert" traverses the realm in an attempt to leave Fairyland once and for all.[3][4][5][6] A "director's cut", the I Hate Fairyland – I Hate Fairyland Image Special Edition, was published on October 4, 2017.[7][8]

Receiving a universally positive critical reception,[9][10][11][12][13] the one-shot was followed by the story arc Sadly Never After.[14]

Plot

After beating up Kamau Kogo on Bitch Planet and learning how to traverse the Image Universe to return home, Gert kills versions of Rick Grimes and Coach Euless Boss before following the Paper Girls into Image City, populated by various superheroes (including Invincible).[15] After being led to the god-run nightclub Wic + Div by Tony Chu, Gert sets off a battle royale between the various heroes and villains within, stealing their weaponry in the process, before seeking out the aid of Spawn to give her access to the Image Central building.[16] After killing everyone in the building and confronting the founders of Image Comics, Gert demands to be allowed to go home, killing them all as a show of force before realising she needed one of them alive to return home. Dejected, Gert returns to Fairyland with Larry.[17]

Development

In December 2021, re-releasing I Hate Image for free via Substack, Skottie Young described the story's conception as:

"This was one of my favorite projects. Most people grew up categorizing themselves as a “Marvel kid” or “DC kid.” I was straight up, 100% an IMAGE kid! Image Comics grabbed a hold of me and never let go. Spawn, Maxx, Young Blood, Super Patriot, Cyber Force, Pitt, Trencher, and…well fuck, I could just keep going on and on. The point is, I bought out almost every title that Image put your from day one. So, imagine how excited I was when Eric Stephenson asked me to do a full comic of MY character Gert from I Hate Fairyland wrecking shop through as many Image books as I could for Free Comic Book Day. Seriously, I have never felt more MAD Magazine than that month in 2017 while I made this comic with my crew, Jean-Francois Beaulieu and Nate Piekos."[18]

Reception

ComicBook.com lauded I Hate Image "for the victory lap of modern Image Comics' excellence, and a few good laughs [which serve as] a lot of fun with a lot of solid jokes that work for both Gert and the worlds she's entering",[9] with You Don't Read Comics complimenting the series as "incredibly fun and wildy entertaining", considering its premise "an absolute treat".[10] NPR described the story as "aimed squarely at the comics cognoscenti [and] packed with in-jokes and asides that will zip past readers who don't know Image's books — but, crucially, it won't alienate those noobs" praising "[Skottie] Young's writing [with] his art [being] so danged appealing that even readers who don't know a Wic from a Div will happily go along for the ride",[11] and Entertainment Weekly similarly calling it "a fun little treat Image fans shouldn't miss".[12] Les Comics praised the "dark humor, violence, gory (but funny) scenes, self-deprecation and homage to the world of comics all present in this really good one-shot [with] Skottie Young really enjoy[ing] himself and let[ting] off steam with [his] creation, whether in the writing or the drawings".[13]
