BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology or BUFT is a university in Bangladesh.[1][2] It was established with the aim to produce technically competent human resources for the ready-made garments sector of the country.

History

It was established by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in 1999 as BGMEA Institute of Fashion & Technology (BIFT) which started functioning in 2000 and was affiliated to the National University, Bangladesh in 2001. BUFT, in collaboration with international organizations such as United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), European Union (EU), German Technical Co-operation (GTZ), and the South Asia Enterprise Development fund (SEDF), is working for further growth and development.

PGD program

PGD in Apparel Merchandising is a one-year program.A student has to earn 42 credits to be eligible for PGD Degree. After completion of the program, a student will be competent to join as merchandisers in the RMG sector.

BUFT Library

BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) Library has started its journey since the inception of BGMEA Institute of Fashion and Technology (BIFT) in 1999. BUFT has been affiliated in 2012 and collections have been growing steadily according to the demand of study and research. The Library is supporting study and teaching with physical collection of 5500 books (approx.), 30 titles of journals, 2500 periodicals, different professional magazines, newspapers and AV collections.

Library management

Library Management Software- Koha has been installed, implemented and customized for BUFT Library Automation in 2017. Library collections are organized according to the international standard of OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) www.opac.buft.edu.bd Physical collections are available for user services using the software.

The BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) library started its journey with 1,000 volumes of books, now the collection of the books has reached about ten thousand. From the very beginning of its journey the focus was to ensure better services to its users. The Library collections and services, physical and virtual, provided outstanding support for recognized research in various programs while also addressing the learning needs of about four thousand students across the campus. Students and faculty ranked the Library as the most important source of information for their research. Library facilities are being framed as more flexible learning spaces with collaborative, individual study, instruction, and calm environment.

International cooperation

An agreement of cooperation was signed with Wuhan Textile University to develop a joint undergraduate major for fashion design.[4]

On 30 August 2015, BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) and Goethe-Institut in Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This MoU is a framework of mutual interest in the fields of educational and academic exchanges, joint fashion competitions, research, internships, and academic transfer agreements and will encourage international cultural exchanges between BUFT and Goethe-Institut. Under the MoU, both parties will host local and international fashion workshops and exhibitions for German and Bangladeshi students.[5][6]

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) and Swedish University of Boras with the opportunity of joint research including student exchange. University of Boras Vice-Chancellor Maths Tinsten and BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology Chairman Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin signed the MoU.

With the signing of this MoU, a new door will be opened between the two universities. In addition to student exchange and joint research, both universities will get internship opportunities.[7][8]
